oh gee, i guess black peoples hair hasnt been villified for over 500 years to where we were forced to cover it with scarves by slave owners, forced to find caustic chemicals that burn us to make it look like white hair,
coz we still lose and are denied jobs over wearing it as is?

When everyone else can simply grow it out without having to face ridicule on the street, sneers and judgement?
only non-black people have the luxury of saying “its just hair”. We get treated shittier, the more afro our hair appears.
If youve never known what it is to have to spend hours upon hours w scalding hot styling tools, and chemicals that burn thru your scalp, just to be treated even semi-human,

If youve never had every single one of your cultural hairstyles villified and touted as disgusting, lowclass fare on top of it?
If you havent had folks with silky hair leave that shit everywhere, only to turn around and tell you to pick up and keep track of every last strand of yours, coz somehow yours is disgusting and theirs isnt?
If you havent had your hair likened to rusty brillo pads your whole life, only to then have some designer actually put brillos on models to ridicule you some more?

I have always found that jeans hurt my body with waistlines digging into my stomach as I try to exhale.

T shirts that cut into my arms, bras that dig into my flesh leaving scars that remain today.

We were not the architects of this system, of course these things won’t fit us when they come from people who refuse to acknowledge that we exist. We know this because we see their runways, their print ads, their magazines. We are not wrong.

Beige is not the definition of ‘nude’, my hair does not need to be restrained, it needs to be liberated. My hair isn’t so thick, I didn’t go through puberty too early, my mama is not ‘plus sized’ - these statement all use an invented standard of whiteness and then define me in relation to that standard.

Fuck mainstream. Fuck counter culture and sub culture. We are our own mainstream. We are our own culture.

Fuck standards and constructions of normal. Nothing ever grew by being measured. We grow by being nurtured and affirmed for who we are as we are. Standards are always relative.

These cards, collected by Langston Hughes and held with his papers in Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, advertised “rent parties” to be held in Harlem in the 1940s and 1950s.

Hosts of these gatherings opened up their apartments for a night, charging a fee to guests in return for live music, dancing, and socializing. Food was extra, and the accumulated cash went to help the hosts pay their rent. Sandra L. West points out that black tenants in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s faced discriminatory rental rates. That, along with the generally lower salaries for black workers, created a situation in which many people were short of rent money. These parties were originally meant to bridge that gap.

One of the strangest commonly shared characteristics of both the giraffe and okapi is their tongue, which in both is purplish-black, extraordinarily long, and, most oddly, prehensile. Their tongues are well suited to fit their dietary needs: it can wrap around leaves and pull them off their branch with ease.

Oddly, diet is also a factor behind one of the biggest differences between the two species. Okapis live in tropical forests, where leaves are found abundantly at lower levels, and thus boasts an only somewhat elongated neck, usefully for getting higher than forest dwelling antelope, but not much higher.

The giraffe however must search for food on the open savannah, where competition for food is much fiercer, due both to the less leafy nature of the grasslands, and to the large herds of antelope that share the environment. It has therefore benefitted from a neck that is ridiculously stretched, allowing it to eat at heights far above its grassland neighbors.
